O'Neill Review | Fall 2022

With the warm hues returning to the trees, Fall is definitely in the air. And a spectacular Fall at that. I love this time of year. My Summer started off slow but the second half was bustling with activity. Rajnee and I took our young son, Nicholas, back East to introduce him to friends. Stops included Quebec City, Montreal and the Thousand Islands. It was truly a Summer to remember with Nicholas starting to crawl and his curiosity forever growing. Seeing the world through a child’s eyes is truly a blessing and Rajnee and I are enjoying every minute of it. (see updated photos below)

Our business has been steady in these uncertain times and everyone at O’Neill Group is grateful for that. We’ve been able to spend time in person with clients and that is truly refreshing. It’s been so nice to connect face to face again. Hopefully, this Fall we will have an opportunity to continue to do so.

The Fall has always felt like the start of the new season with people going back to work and kids starting back at school. Let’s not forget about hockey and NFL football too! Wishing you and your family a wonderful Fall with opportunities to connect with friends and loved ones.

Cheers,

Government programs are changing, is your benefits plan keeping up?...

Recently there has been a lot of coverage of two big announcements from the federal government. First, they will be extending the EI Sickness benefit from the current 15 weeks to 26 weeks of payments. Second, they are launching the first phase of the National Dental plan. How this will impact employee benefits programs has yet to be determined, but industry experts are watching these developments closely.

B.C. Cancer Care is in a Pinch; What can you do to ensure timely access to healthcare?

Andrea Woo’s recent Globe and Mail article, ‘B.C.’s cancer care marked by long wait times, staff shortages’ discusses, in detail, the decline of cancer care in BC, and predicts a rather bleak future. This article really hit home with me as almost every member of my family has experienced at least one cancer diagnosis. I personally have experienced skin cancer twice; both of my parents have experienced multiple incidents of different types of cancer. I, and all my family members, experienced excellent and timely care in the public system but, those incidents were more than 8 years ago.

What can we expect for the rest of 2022?

Back in the spring we shared an article by Manulife Investment Management about the volatility in the financial markets and a few tips and strategies on navigating the turbulence (posted on our website in case you missed it).

After a brief respite this summer, the markets have once again turned volatile. The following article provides a timely update and a look ahead at what we can expect for the remainder of 2022.

While volatility is expected to continue, the message remains the same – do not panic, ensure your allocation is a good fit, and stay the course. As always, I encourage you to get in touch to further discuss the specifics of your investment portfolio.
