Spring is in full force and it is certainly a treat this year with warm sunny days well needed after a winter that dragged on a tad too long. First and foremost, as things are heating up, we are excited to announce some new additions to our team!

Please join us in welcoming Grace and Danielle to our company. Grace comes to us with a Bachelor's specializing in Criminology and is providing support to the Individual Insurance department. Danielle joins us with over 10 years of experience in sales, administration, and customer service. She is supporting the employee benefits team. We are delighted to have them here and are confident they will make great additions to the team.

Improving Workplace Outcomes by Prioritizing Mental Health Benefits

Benefits plans continue to evolve year after year, but the one area that continues to fall short in many programs is having sufficient mental health support. The Canadian Psychological Association now recommends having between $3,500 to $4,000 per year of paramedical coverage in a benefits plan. With the growing need for mental health services in Canada, it's important that employers evaluate the level of support within their benefits platforms. Studies show that by offering comprehensive mental health coverage and resources, employers can create a healthier and more productive workplace, improve employee retention, and enhance their bottom line.

Canada Life's My Par Gift, a New Way to Make a Difference

You may have contemplated an endowment to your favorite charity but were uncertain about how to proceed; one option is the gift of Life insurance.

In the past, gifting life insurance to a charity required a long term commitment from both the Patron and the Charity. The Patron entered into a financial commitment to pay premiums over a number of years while the Charity waited to receive the benefit. Canada Life has attempted to address the long term commitment for both the Patron and the Charity with the launch of their new, non-exempt Whole Life insurance plan, My Par Gift Whole Life.

When Did Safety Get So Volatile?

Fixed-income securities, commonly known as bonds, have traditionally played a conservative role in investment portfolios, aiming to provide stable returns (albeit lower than equities) while offering downside protection. In essence, fixed-income is intended to be the safer component of a portfolio.

However, 2022 proved to be a challenging year for fixed-income securities due to their inverse relationship with interest rates. This means that as interest rates rise, bond prices tend to fall, and when interest rates decline, bond prices tend to rise. As interest rates increased significantly worldwide in 2022, fixed-income securities suffered, along with the theoretically safe portion of many investment portfolios.
